Due to the high number of those living with food insecurity in our communities, Compassion Coalition is making strides in delivering prepared heat and go meals, as well as fresh produce and fruit to local schools, higher education facilities, and senior living sites through Your Bargain Grocer.
13.1% of Oneida County is Food Insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from. Compassion Coalition strives to think outside the box with sustainable programs designed to target needy demographics most vulnerable to lower that number. A few of our approaches are outlined below:
Monthly Pop Up Grocery Stores at Utica Municipal Housing sites for the elderly and disabled. This allows this 150 elderly and disabled tenants living in 3 buildings on limited incomes to obtain healthy, fresh products to stretch their food dollars, while allowing personal choices of what they want to take home.
C3 pantry at Mohawk Valley Community College. Serving the 69% of students at MVCC living at or below the poverty level with quick and easy meals, as well as personal care and sundry products.
Healthy snack distributions to local schools. NYS covers breakfast and lunch at local schools for children who are eligible for free lunch, but they do not provide snacks. Compassion Coalition provides snacks to educators teaching at local schools for their neediest students, so that they will not have to be hungry during snack time.
